Maple syrup is a natural sugar and, therefore, should be consumed in moderation. While natural sugar products tend to have a lower glycemic index than commercially processed sugar made from sugar cane, its nutritional value tends to be somewhat exaggerated.
Some brands claim that maple syrup is rich in antioxidants, protect against cancer, improve skin conditions and other claims, but I suspect that the clinical underpinnings of these claims tend to be lacking.
While is it great to incorporate natural sugar products and fruits into your diet, most diets recommend that you limit the intake of sugar and keep processed carbohydrates to a minimum
In other words, if given the choice between a tablespoon of maple syrup and a tablespoon of mashed kale, please opt for fresh vegetables. Your body and your waistline will thank you.
One should consume maple syrup in moderation, regardless of any nutritional claims.
Simply enjoy the taste and, where possible, substitute natural sugar products from sugars produced commercially.
