Where possible I eat natural food products and am inclined to use “natural” rather than fabricated serving dishes.
In particular, I have grown quite attached to the elegance and versatility of olive wood. As there appears to be a massive over-supply of olive oil in today’s market, many growers have been forced to re-purpose their olive trees.
To a certain extent, large growers and major olive oil conglomerates have brought this situation on themselves by deliberately mislabeling olive oil to deceive consumers into thinking they are buying “extra virgin olive oil.” No less of an authority than Pierluigi Tosato, executive chairman of the world’s largest olive oil company, has concluded that the “business model is broken.”
As long as consumers think they can actually purchase “extra virgin olive oil” for under $10, the business model will remain broken. It is sad to see reputable food chains like Whole Foods (among others), shamelessly promote fraudulent EVOO to consumers. In effect, unscrupulous producers and distributors have perpetrated a massive fraud on consumers.
As such, many smaller producers have been forced to create elegant olive wood serving pieces to compensate for the lack of income they receive from harvesting olives and pressing these olives into oil.
Gourmet Living is proud to make a few of these hand-crafted olive wood products available to our clients. These items are quite functional and they make excellent Christmas gifts and hostess gifts for fellow gourmands.
Rustic Olive Wood Bread Basket
This rustic olive wood bread basket measures just over 13″ and is ideal for baguettes to be dipped in olive oil. Given its unique and natural wood lines, this bread basket is our most popular selling item. Why settle for inferior woods like Acacia or reconstituted wood products when you purchase natural wood products?
Selling for just over $40.00, this bread basket is easy to clean. Simply brush or wipe clean with a damp cloth. Occasionally condition with olive oil to maintain the luster of the wood. Each piece is individually boxed.
Olive Wood Pepper Mill
Looking for something a little special this year? Look no further than Gourmet Living’s olive wood pepper mill which is sold with an attractive linen bag. This pepper grinder measures just over 10.5″ and is certain to attract the attention of fellow gourmands.
Each piece is unique and crafted from Tunisian olive wood. This is not a commercial pepper grinder designed for heavy kitchen use. It is best used at the dining table to gently and gracefully season food in an elegant dining setting.
Olive Wood Salad Hands
I don’t know about you, but I have very strong opinions about salad hands to toss salads. In particular, I detest most salad hands because the fingers or “tine” are so widely spaced that most of the delicate salad bits like bacon, cheese and dried fruit will generally sink to the bottom of the bowl. These salad claws eliminate that problem. Chefs who are frustrated with traditional salads hands will see this is as a most useful addition to their kitchen.
These olive wood salad hands made from natural olive wood sell for just over $25 but are often on sale. Together with an attractive linen bag, the salad hands make a great gift for the holidays.
For those looking for unique gifts this holiday season, select one of Gourmet Living’s unique olive wood serving utensils and pair with a great bottle of authentic extra virgin olive oil.
